The first Friday of the month is one of the best times to check out Mainframe Studios, located downtown. Support local artists through their exhibitions, check out workshops, and view one-of-a-kind pieces from artisans. This month welcomes us into Black History Month. “Black History Month recognizes the contributions of African Americans as triumphant, resilient, and inextricable from, yet transcendent of, the American story. The February First Friday exhibition is a creative lens on such transcendence then & now, and of optimism for Black futures.” – Abena Sankofa Imhotep – Author and Mainframe Artist

Dome After Dark at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Experience the Garden in a new light at Dome After Dark! It’s honestly very pretty and a great date idea. Most Fridays from now through the end of March, stroll through the lush conservatory and Gardeners Show House illuminated with unique lighting and luminarias. This family friendly event will include food and drink available for purchase from Trellis Café. Normal admission rates apply!

Love a special cocktail? Love Europe? Want to learn about both? Django has a fun opportunity this weekend to attend a unique pop-up cocktail event inspired by European travels. Options of drinks, small bites, and more with prices ranging from $20-60 per person.

Looking for some live music weekend? The Nadas are at Wooly’s on Friday night. This band got its start in Ames in the nineties and has been on the scene ever since. According to Wikipedia, they describe themselves as “a folk rock quintet based in Des Moines.” General admission is $25.

Ski, Snowboard, or Tube at Seven Oaks

Ok, maybe you’re a pro skier and snowboarder and this is ridiculous to you. But to us, complete novices in our late twenties? This is actually doable…and kind of fun! Drive north to Seven Oaks for a fun day of skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. Snow tubing tickets must be purchased online. Ski/snowboard tickets are first come, first serve. They serve food and some beer in the lodge! Hit up Whatcha Smokin’ for amazing BBQ on the way back to Des Moines. 


Art Terrarium’s One Year Anniversary in Highland Park

One year at Highland Park! It’s a great weekend to go houseplant shopping and an especially greater Saturday to visit Highland Park. Art Terrarium is celebrating its first year in the neighborhood with a special anniversary sale. Check out Saturday’s headliner: “Felonious Munk is a comedian, social commentator, and above average beardsman, currently based in Chicago. As an actor Munk is known for playing the recurring roles of Hassan on the ABC series FOR LIFE and The Laughter on Max’s series SOUTH SIDE, as well as starring in the feature film NIGHT’S END on Shudder (alongside Michael Shannon), and the BET feature film BLOCK PARTY.”

The Orchestra performs the Midwest Premiere of Wang Lu’s innovative Surge in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic’s World Premiere.”
